Peros Left

Situated in Sumba, Indonesia, Pero Lefts is an impressive reef break known for its high-quality refracting bowl sections, offering surfers deep barrels. Navigating the challenging waves that break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef can be a rewarding experience, especially as Pero Lefts maintains its size exceptionally well.

What are the optimal surf conditions for Pero Lefts?

The ideal conditions range from waist-high to triple overhead. It is recommended to use a short board or a step-up board as the wave size increases. This break is suitable for surfers with intermediate and advanced skill levels. The surf quality is consistently high (rated 7 out of 10), and the crowd factor is generally low (rated 4 out of 10). The most favorable winds come from the Northeast, while the best swells originate from the Southwest and West. Pero Lefts is accessible at all tide levels.

In the Pero area, situated on the western side of Sumba, there are both right-hand and left-hand waves at the first-named surf break. Despite being often regarded as separate spots, it’s understandable, given that it’s not your typical A-frame setup. These waves are positioned on opposite sides of a river mouth along Pero Beach. Notably, the right-hander tends to be less impressive, requiring robust wet-season swells exceeding 5 feet to become surfable.

The standout feature is the left-hander that gracefully enters the bay on the south side of the estuary. With a favorable dry-season SW swell and a morning offshore trade wind, this wave is a gem that could stand up to renowned spots like the Mentawais or even Money Trees in G-Land, albeit with a slightly mellower character.

Regardless of what it brings to mind, you’ll likely find yourself fully engaged as you navigate the hollow sections, returning to the channel after pulling into the pocket. It’s a fantastic wave on its best days—enjoyable, surfable, but perhaps a bit unpredictable.

The true standout is the left-hander, gracefully entering the bay on the south side of the estuary. During favorable dry-season SW swells and morning offshore trades, this wave transforms into a gem, capable of rivaling renowned spots like the Mentawais or even Money Trees in G-Land, albeit with a slightly more laid-back demeanor. Regardless of comparisons, the experience of riding through the hollow sections and seamlessly returning to the channel is unparalleled. It stands as a fantastic wave on its best days, providing exhilarating and rip-able moments, yet it might be deemed somewhat capricious.

For attire, board shorts or a bikini are recommended throughout the year. During the summer, water temperatures reach 28 degrees Celsius before slightly dropping to 25 degrees Celsius in the winter. Refer to the temperature chart below for a comprehensive overview of seasonal variations.
