Nihiwatu
Situated in Sumba, Indonesia, Nihiwatu (known as Occy’s Left) is an impressive reef break that delivers extended barrels or dynamic performance walls, contingent on the tide. The waves carry considerable weight, breaking for a distance of up to 300 meters over a coral reef. The larger the waves, the better the experience.
It’s worth noting that the resort positioned in front claims exclusive access to the reef. This claim is in direct contradition to island tradition and regulations of all three levels of government.
What are the optimal surf conditions for Occy’s Left?
The ideal conditions range from waist-high to triple overhead. It is recommended to start with a shortboard and transition to a step-up as the size of the waves increases. This break caters to surfers with intermediate to advanced skill levels. The surf quality here is consistently high (rated 7 out of 10), and the crowd factor tends to be relatively low (rated 4 out of 10).
The most favorable winds blow from the Northeast, while the best swells originate from the South or Southwest. Occy’s Left is accessible at all tide levels, with lower tides providing more opportunities for barrels.
NiHi Resort is described as truly fantastic. The wave is dubbed God’s Left; it showcasing its perfection on SW-S dry season moderate swells. It crests off the point into a beautifully spinning hollow section before transitioning into a inviting wall that encourages engaging turns.
